OUR ETHOS AND MISSION

We are an inclusive church, a lively community of all ages, that welcomes all. Whether we are male, female or other, gay or straight, regardless of ethnicity, those who are seeking faith and those who doubt are equally valued.

We are committed to building a thriving, spiritually healthy community for all who seek a greater sense of peace, purpose and belonging.

We view as our mission as having three areas of focus:

Loving God

We aim to support the spiritual journey of every person we come into contact with, no matter where they are starting from or what their spiritual beliefs are.  We see questioning and doubting as an inherent part of being human and trying to open to God, and hope that as a community we can share our own experiences and understandings.

We offer a variety of ways to approach prayer.  Our regular offerings include a contemplative prayer group, a Bible studio/lectio divina group, and a contemplative eucharist, as well as more mainstream Morning and Evening Prayer, weekday mass, and Sung Parish Eucharist on Sundays.  During Lent and Advent we often have study or reflection groups aimed at approaching God through specific texts or practices.

We have a particular interest in providing a space for children to open themselves to the numinous.  Our work is underpinned by the approaches of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Godly Play, enabling children to engage with the stories of our faith in whatever way God leads them.

Loving our Neighbours

We come together on Sunday mornings to worship, connect, and be strengthened by the Sacrament, not for its own sake, but in order to be sent out again, refreshed and renewed, to share God's love with our neighbours.  As a parish we do this in a number of ways.  We welcome people at our free community lunch on Thursdays, where we offer food and fellowship.  Our Noah's Ark stay-and play attracts families from across Hornsey, many in need of help and care during the challenging early years.  Our Y Hornsey project supports the most vulnerable children and families in our community, and our chaplaincy at the YMCA Hostel supports the young people resident there, who often have little or no other source of care.

Our church is open every day for people to come in and sit and pray or just be. Our recent first phase of our Open Door 60/60 project has made the building more accessible and welcoming, and we have a tiny community larder from which people can help themselves.  (We also work with our local food banks, and during the pandemic our large hall was a storage hub for them.)

Loving Creation

We are working as a parish on educating ourselves about how we can be better stewards of the Earth, and making incremental improvements to our communal life.  We have been guided in this by our Loving Creation Group, who for the past few years have hosted a Sowing the Seeds Festival at the beginning of October, in honour of the Feast of St. Francis.  It has included talks, panels, visits to sustainable gardens, and gardening activities at church.  We have an active gardening group looking after our modest amount of outdoor space, and growing vegetables for the community every summer;  and we are serious about reducing and managing our own waste--we have a contract with First Mile, which ensures that no waste goes to landfill.  We are pleased to have reached Bronze and now Silver level Rocha Eco-Church Awards, and are on our way to achieving Gold.
